Description

Storm Boy, by Colin Thiele, is a classic Australian story that students enjoy. The fact that the language used has so many educational opportunities is a big plus for me. The students I see are usually years behind their peers in reading development. I teach reading through reading, and I need a book that will stimulate interest as well as provide me with the opportunity to adapt it to the skills I need to target in accelerating reading skill progression. Storm Boy ticks all the boxes.

These fourteen games will benefit students of all abilities but they provide the added benefit of being highly engaging and providing the extra support some students need. The repetition of playing a game with precise educational targets will lead to learning.

SPOONS: 8 Games - 2 to 6 Players B&W: This card game targets deconstruction of multi-syllable words for those students who lack confidence and habitually guess, usually contributing to low comprehension. All students have so much fun with this game you'll need to hide it until you're ready for the mayhem.

DONKEY: 2 Games - 2 to 6 Players B&W: I have adapted this card game to target comprehension as the setting of the story may need more explanation for those students not familiar with that area of Australia or the coastal environment. Words like 'sedately' and 'forlornly' are included. This game suits all ages and it is easy to leave cards out if you don't need them.

STACK 4: 4 Games (Compound & Multisyllabic Words) 2 Players B&W: This is probably the easiest game to use. It is a worksheet/game and targets word recognition only. If you are targeting vocabulary development only, this is the game. Photocopy and go. The game element needs two players and a six-sided die. The play is as unpredictable as the throw of the die so the same worksheet can be played over and over. This game is perfect when comprehension is not a concern.

The Bonus Game is WORD WIZARD (2 to 5 players). It targets syllabication, grammar, spelling and writing in a board/card game format with five boards and 54 word cards.
