MATILDA - 4 Worksheet/Games - STACK 4 - Chapter 1
Overview
Description
You will build vocabulary with this game based on Chapter 1 of Matilda by Roald Dahl. It is a worksheet in game format meaning high levels of engagement. It is a game for two players but you can play with the whole class if you have enough dice. Each game needs a six-sided die and something to mark the spaces (pencils are okay for one-time use). Players throw the die and choose a word in the column that corresponds with the throw of the die. If they read the word correctly, they can claim that space. The first player to claim a stack of four is the winner, but their opponent can block to add to the fun. The MISS A TURN throw gives their opponent an advantage and the fun continues. All this while learning the vocabulary from Chapter 1. It is an inclusive game as fluency will benefit regardless of ability levels. The throw of the die means the game is never the same twice.
I have developed the games for all 21 chapters because I find my students love it. It can be as quick as five minutes for a player to make their first stack, but you can extend the game if there is a chance for more stacks to be won. There is value in playing over and over when students are motivated and repetition always leads to improvement.
