Description

This game was developed to target decoding skills of three syllable words in Matilda written by Roald Dahl. When students lose confidence in deconstructing longer words they often guess. The result maybe a nonsense word or something similar starting with the first letters or syllable. Nevertheless, comprehension will be affected. When students have developed this habit it needs to be challenged and this game will do it. Breaking multi-syllabic words into manageable syllables is what we do as efficient readers. It's a skill. You deconstruct to make meaning, and you need to be able to reconstruct this word in order to use it in oral language or writing. This is how we build our lexicons, the store of words we have in our heads to communicate.

I have found this game very effective in breaking the habit of guessing multisyllabic words. Students are so engaged trying to win they become engrossed in blending the syllables on their cards to construct a three syllable word. The word list in each set lists the words included and allowing the student to reference this list involves both deconstruction and construction simultaneously. It's magic.

This is the free version for you to try. I have made it for all the chapters in the full version. It provides skill development for all levels of ability, enhancing fluency rates the more the game is played. It is also part of a bundle that will add variety and fun with high levels of engagement as students study the literacy unit.
