Students cut out the picture cards , say each word aloud, identify the target sound and then place the picture in the correct column. Depending on the sound being practised, students may need to listen for the sound at the beginning, middle or end of the word . The sounds are introduced in the same sequence used in the InitiaLit program at our school , making this resource useful for reinforcing previously taught phonics knowledge: m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, o, c, d, h, e, n, g, l, k, u, b, j, w, ck, ll, ff, ss, sh, qu, ee, z, zz, ch, v, x, y, wh, th, oo, ng, ay Each sound sort comes in two differentiated versions . The first includes 10 picture cards for a simpler and more accessible independent activity. The more challenging version includes 30 picture cards , with 2–4 pictures that do not belong in either category , encouraging students to listen carefully, discriminate between sounds and justify their choices. Both versions are included in colour and black-and-white , making them suitable for reusable laminated activities or low-ink printing. This resource is ideal for independent literacy work, phonics rotations, small groups, revision, intervention or early-finisher activities . It supports students in developing phonemic awareness, sound discrimination and confidence applying their phonics knowledge independently.
